The problem
Biologics, vaccines, insulin and cell therapies must stay within tight temperature bands across long air journeys, with hours spent on tarmacs and in warehouses. EU Good Distribution Practice requires qualified equipment, such as thermal packaging, temperature-controlled containers or vehicles, so that correct conditions are kept from manufacturer to customer (EUR-Lex).
Passive pallet shippers, insulated boxes with cooling packs and no power supply, do this job well and cheaply, which is why they are widely used. But most are single-use. After one trip, the panels, coolants and data logger become waste at the destination, where the shipper has to pay for disposal. Pharmaceutical companies with science-based climate targets are under growing pressure to cut that waste.
The product
Silverpod MAX RE is a reusable version of CSafe’s single-use Silverpod MAX passive pallet shipper, launched in July 2024 (CSafe). Its main features are:
- reusable build, with durable exterior panels and extended edge and corner cap protection, made entirely of reusable components;
- PCM coolants, reusable Pharmacool MAX phase change materials that are recyclable and designed to prevent cold shock;
- 120+ hours of qualified thermal protection;
- a built-in TracSafe RLT data logger, included in the lease, which reports GPS location, payload temperature, ambient temperature, shock and tilt;
- CSafe Connect, a cloud portal for ordering, live tracking, alerts by email and text, and GDP-compliant shipment reports;
- flat-pack supply, for cheaper delivery and storage and faster assembly (CSafe).
How it works
- Lease: a pharma company or freight forwarder rents units from CSafe.
- Pack: the flat-packed shipper is assembled with conditioned PCM coolants and loaded with the pallet of medicines.
- Fly: the shipper travels by air or road, with no power, holding temperature for more than 120 hours.
- Watch: the logger sends temperature, location, shock and tilt data to CSafe Connect, so teams can act on alerts during the trip.
- Return: CSafe collects the shipper, refurbishes the components and puts it back into service, so the customer has nothing to dispose of.

Impact and numbers
- One shipper, many trips: by moving from single-use to rental, CSafe says customers avoid disposal costs and inconvenience, and its recycle-reuse programme handles end-of-life materials (CSafe). Trade press described it as the existing single-use Silverpod MAX rebuilt entirely from reusable components, using recyclable PCM refrigerants and a new integrated tracking device (Air Cargo Vision).
- Data built in: in the RE version the real-time logger is part of the lease, so visibility comes with every trip. CSafe Connect lets customers group shipments, create unlimited user accounts and download GDP-compliant PDF reports, and sends live alerts through the platform, email and text message.
- Wider reusable range: CSafe’s earlier CSafeAPS reusable pallet shipper was tested against ISTA 7D thermal profiles, offers more than 120 hours of protection and reports temperature, humidity, pressure, shock, tilt and door events, plus a predicted remaining thermal capacity by lane (CSafe).
- Combined business: the 2021 Softbox deal created what CSafe called the only cold chain platform spanning both active air cargo containers and passive temperature-controlled packaging, with plans for new reusable and recyclable pallet and parcel products. CSafe’s chief executive, Patrick Schafer, said the aim was to be “the partner of choice for cold chain delivery of high value, temperature sensitive pharmaceutical therapies” (CSafe).
- India: CSafe’s Hyderabad facility near the international airport was opened by Telangana’s Industries Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, and supports demand for passive containers and thermal blankets (India Seatrade News).
Honest caveats. The sustainability case for reusable shippers depends on high return rates and efficient back-haul. Flying or trucking empty shippers home has its own emissions, and a reusable unit is heavier and uses more material than a single-use one, so it must make many trips to come out ahead. CSafe has not published trip counts, return rates or an independent life-cycle assessment for Silverpod MAX RE in the sources reviewed. The thermal and tracking figures come from CSafe’s own materials. CSafe is a private equity-owned company and does not publish detailed accounts. Single-use Silverpod MAX remains on sale, so the reusable version adds an option rather than replacing waste outright.
What’s next
CSafe is pushing its rental models and digital tools, building on the Softbox deal’s promise of more reusable pallet and parcel products, and has expanded its presence in India. The next tests are how quickly pharma customers move their high-volume lanes from single-use to rental, and whether CSafe starts publishing reuse and emissions data.
Why it matters for Europe / green buyers
The Silverpod line was developed in Britain by Softbox, and Europe’s large pharmaceutical industry ships temperature-sensitive medicines around the world by air. The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which applies from 12 August 2026, sets a target that from 2030 at least 40% of transport packaging such as boxes, crates and pallets used within the EU be reusable within a re-use system (EUR-Lex). Rental pallet shippers with managed returns give pharma companies a ready way to move toward that target while keeping GDP-compliant temperature records.
India is a major exporter of generic medicines and vaccines, and many high-value consignments leave by air. CSafe’s Hyderabad base sits in one of India’s main pharmaceutical clusters. If Indian exporters can rent reusable, tracked pallet shippers locally, they can cut packaging waste at destination ports and give European buyers the temperature data they demand.
